The Sky's the Limit? Reaching for the Value of PLM at Boeing Commercial Airplanes

Product lifecycle Management has become critical for improving cooperation between business functions, supporting globalization and most significantly reducing lead times and costs. It has also been a key enabler for establishing common processes, improved integration with the supply chain and increasing production rates.  However, despite large investment and company led focus, the full value of PLM remains elusive. 

This presentation reviews BCA’s PLM journey of the past 20 years and thoughts for improved value realization in the future.

Chief Architect Commercial Airplanes Processes & Tools, Boeing

Kevin Fowler is Chief Architect of Commercial Airplanes Processes & Tools responsible for the technical integration and integrity of the process & tool solutions that support the complete lifecycle of BCA Production Systems.  In this role he is responsible for management of process and tool requirements and objectives, authorizing changes to production system processes and tools, establishing architecture methods and standards and guiding future development to ensure product and service competitiveness.

Previously, Kevin was Vice President of Systems Integration Processes and Tools leading development and implementation of new processes and tools for the 787 Program including Model Based Design, Functional Integration and the Global Collaboration Environment used to integrate with the program Partners and suppliers around the world. Prior to that, Kevin was Director, Integrated Process Management for Commercial Airplanes with the responsibility for program management of the Define and Control Airplane Configuration / Manufacturing Resource Management (DCAC/MRM) process improvement project.

Kevin began his career at Boeing in July 1977 in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics research and methods development. This was followed by various positions as a Structures Analyst, Design Team Leader and Manager supporting development and sustaining Programs.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1977 from the University of California, Davis, a master’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington in 1983 and served as an Advanced Study Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988/1989.
